SPSO Launches Training for Handling Child Friendly Complaints

Rosemary Agnew, the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman (SPSO) has launched online training to help public service organisations handle complaints from or involving children and young people.

The online training course is designed for complaints handlers and frontline staff. It shows how organisations can put children and young people’s rights at the heart of the complaints process.

It was developed based on feedback from children and young people.

The development of the training follows the introduction of a new law introduced in Scotland in July 2024, which means public services must respect children’s rights under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

Rosemary Agnew, the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman said:

“Since the introduction of the UNCRC Act, I have received around 60 complaints involving children across a range of sectors, highlighting the importance of child friendly complaints handling.

Making a complaint can be daunting for anyone. This new training course adds to our growing library of resources to support organisations in handling complaints in a child friendly, accessible way.”

In addition to this training, the SPSO website has links to updates, tools and resources to support complaints handlers, children and young people, and their parents and carers.
